CBSE Class-XI Poetry Syllabus (English Elective)

For the 2021-22 academic year, the final examination paper will comprise of 25% questions from the Literature section. It includes Short Stories, Poetry, and Essays. The second most important section of the question paper is the Literature section that carries a total of 20 marks out of 80. For further reference, you can refer to the CBSE Class-XI English Elective Syllabus (2021-22).

CBSE Class-XI Poetry Syllabus

CBSE’s prescribed textbook for the English Elective course, Woven Words contains 12 poems. Students have to read all the texts for the 2021-22 academic year. These include:

  1. The Peacock by Sujata Bhatt
  2. Let Me Not to the Marriage of True Minds by William Shakespeare
  3. Coming by Philip Larkin
  4. Telephone Conversation by Wole Soyinka
  5. The World is too Much With Us by William Wordsworth
  6. Mother Tongue by Padma Sachdev
  7. Hawk Roosting by Ted Hughes
  8. For Elkana by Nissim Ezekiel
  9. Refugee Blues by W.H. Auden
  10. Felling of the Banyan Tree by Dilip Chitre
  11. Ode to a Nightingale by John Keats
  12. Ajamil and the Tigers by Arun Kolatkar

Questions to be asked from Poetry

MCQs

There will be 18 Multiple Choice Questions to be asked from both Poetry and Prose of the textbook Woven Words. Out of the questions, students have to answer 15 questions that carry 1 mark each. So, the MCQs comprises a total of 15 marks.

SAQs

Two Short Answer Type questions will be asked from either Prose or Poetry. Out of two questions, students have to attempt only one that carries 2 marks. It should be answered in 30-40 words.

Another set of two SAQs will be there. Out of the questions, only one is to be answered. Students have to answer it within 50-60 words. The question carries 3 marks. It can be asked from both Poetry and Prose.

LAQs

In the final exam, there will be no Long Answer Type questions from the texts of Woven Words.

Total

If 7 MCQs are asked from the Poetry section, it will amount to 7 marks. In the SAQs section, students can attempt two questions from poetry, one carrying 2 marks and another 3 marks. So, they can get more or less 12 marks solely from the Poetry section.
